Pillows are one of the easiest accessories you can use to instantly makeover a room. They’re also a great way to add subtle or vibrant color to your decor. So, if you want a new look, try updating your room with new pillows and follow these tips:
Mix and match – It’s very common to mix and match pillows. First, pick a solid color and then choose a pattern that complements the solid pillow. All of the colors should pull from other items in the room, for example, a sofa, rug, artwork or comforter. The pillows don’t have to match, but they should relate to each other to create a unified and cohesive look. You can play around with the pillows until you find the right combination. And don’t be afraid to use multiple textures or different types of material – using texture will bring warmth to the room.
Size – Depending on the look you want to achieve, standard size pillows (18 or 20 inches) will create a formal look. If you want a more casual or lounge look, try using larger size pillows (22 or 24 inches). If you have a smaller sofa with a low back, consider smaller pillows (16 inches).
Number – There is no magic answer to how many pillows you should use. The rule of thumb is to use an odd number of pillows. The number you choose depends on the comfort you desire and the look you want to achieve. Most designers like a symmetrical look to keep things neat and orderly. When you use different size pillows, you will typically use the larger pillows on the sides of the furniture and then place the smaller pillows on the inside of the furniture.
Fill – Down feather pillows are softer and will be more flexible. They are easier to fluff and also feel more luxurious. Foam and synthetic fills are harder to manipulate and may be stiffer. If you want a fuller pillow, you can also use a larger insert.
The most important thing is to have fun and mix and match until it feels right.
Happy Designing!
